The family

The Patels bought their Montreux house for the view: second-growth firs off the back of the lot, Tiger Mountain behind them. The primary bath had all the square footage it needed to make something of that and did nothing with it — a vaulted beige room with an oak vanity, a corner shower stall, a garden tub parked under a small obscured-glass slider, and a wall of bifold closet doors. Their problem was never space. It was that the one window in the room was doing everything it could to hide the trees.

So we turned the room to face them. The tub deck and the slider came out and a black-steel picture window went in, with a freestanding soaking tub in front of it. The oak vanity became one floating slab of book-matched warm gray marble down the left wall, the corner stall became a frameless glass shower that keeps the sightline open from the doorway to the woods, and the bifold closet became blackened oak built-ins with the linen storage hidden below. We traded the empty vault for a tray ceiling with cove lighting, and made every fixture in the room indirect — cove, under-vanity, mirror-backlit — so at dusk nothing competes with that window.

Dramatic, modern, and unmistakably Pacific Northwest: a room that finally admits what's outside it.
